Pranic energy, Prana, Chi or vital force are nothing but different names for one and the same thing, the subtle life energy that permeates all animate and inanimate objects in the manifest universe. When a human being is conceived, pranic energy enters the body and in the moment of death, it leaves the body. Without Prana, there is no life. Naturally, wouldn’t the next question be: “Do all humans have the same amount of Prana?” The answer is easy to guess. No, we don’t. When we come into the presence of a sick person, we can feel their weakness, their fragility. What they are experiencing in the form of an illness and what we are feeling in their presence is a lack of Prana, a pranic depletion. Other peoples’ presence can make us feel alive and energetic, because they radiate, the reason being that they have a storehouse of Prana in their body. Now, where do we get our Prana from? We get it from 3 main sources, the air that we breathe, the food we eat and the sun. When we allow the sun to touch our body, we draw in Prana. If we do this consciously, for example by looking into the sun, when it is not too strong of course, we draw in more Prana. The native American Indians used to sing to the sun, that is also a conscious way of drawing in Prana. In hindu practices and rituals a specific mantra is recited at sunrise and sunset while looking at the sun thereby consciously drawing in the Prana. Nature’s garden supplies us with Prana through the plants we eat. The more natural and the closer to their original state our grains and vegetables and fruits are, the more Prana they supply for our body. The more consciously we eat which means focusing on our food, the more Prana our body can extract from the food. The quality of our water is also of great importance, it directly influences the Prana in the foods which we get from Mother Nature. If our food is grown with clean and high quality, alive water, our blood we be equally good and healthy.

Out of the 3 main sources which supply our organism with Prana, our Breath is the most important. We can live without food for quite a long time, we can live without water for several days, we can live without sunshine for an extended period of time, but we cannot survive more than a few minutes without breathing. Obviously, our breath and of course the quality of our air are of utmost significance. Our breath is our number one tool and the fastest and most effective, to consciously take in Prana. In the science of Yoga, there is a tremendous emphasis on breathing exercises, called Pranayama. These exercises are designed to draw in and store Prana. The good news is that we can draw in more Prana than we need and store it for times when our organism needs a larger supply or for performing special abilities like healing for example. When an extra supply of Prana gets drawn into the body and this is true for all different ways of Prana coming in, it gets stored in the solar plexus, a net of nerves very similar to the nerves in the brain. It is for this reason that the solar plexus is sometimes also referred to as the “little brain”. The phenomenon of the so called guru belly is nothing other than a large storehouse of Prana which gets used for special psychic or spiritual abilities.

Basically, we can say that our health and our overall state of wellbeing depend on how much Prana we take in. The more we breathe, the more alive, healthy and happy we are. Fortunately this knowledge is no longer accessible only to a chosen few. You and me and every ordinary person in the street can now improve their quality of life. Take a deep breath!
